A step-up SIP is a normal SIP that you increase by a fixed percentage every year — usually 10%, roughly in line with income growth. Over 20 years, stepping up 10% a year can build 60 to 90% more than keeping the same amount flat, or let you start about a third lower for the same end goal.
A flat Rs.10,000 a month for 20 years at a 12% assumed return builds close to Rs.1 crore.
Start the same Rs.10,000 but raise it 10% every year — Rs.11,000 in year 2, Rs.12,100 in year 3, and so on — and you finish with meaningfully more, because every rupee of those later, larger contributions still gets years to compound.
| Over 20 years, 12% assumed | Flat SIP | 10% step-up SIP |
|---|---|---|
| Start at Rs.10,000/month | ~Rs.1 crore | Significantly more |
| To reach ~Rs.1 crore | Rs.10,000 flat | Start near Rs.6,500 |
Your income is lowest at the start of your career and highest later. A flat SIP asks the hardest version of you — the one earning the least — to carry the whole load. A step-up SIP asks a little now and more later, exactly when raises and promotions make it easy. Most people can absorb a 10% SIP increase in a year they got a 10-15% raise without feeling it.
The planner lets you set a step-up rate per goal. When you do, it recalculates the starting SIP downward and shows the lower monthly commitment needed today — often the difference between a plan that fits your surplus and one that does not.
Q. Does the fund company have to support step-up SIPs?
A. Many platforms let you register an automatic annual increase. If yours does not, you can simply raise the SIP amount manually once a year — the effect is identical.
Q. Is 10% a year too aggressive?
A. It is tied to income growth, not markets, so if your salary rises ~10% a year it is sustainable. If your increments are smaller, set the step-up to match — even 5% helps a lot over 20 years.
Q. Step-up SIP or lump sum top-ups?
A. Both work. A step-up is automatic and disciplined; lump sum top-ups (from a bonus, say) are flexible. Doing both is ideal — raise the SIP yearly and add windfalls when they come.
Q. What if I need to pause during a job loss?
A. Pause the SIP, lean on your emergency fund, and resume when income is back. A temporary pause costs far less than never having started or redeeming your corpus.
