Is the Extra NPS 80CCD(1B) ₹50,000 Deduction Worth the Lock-In?

Tax · 12 September 2026 · Plan Our Future

The extra NPS deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) can save someone in the 30% slab up to ~₹15,600 a year in tax, but it locks that money up till age 60, and even then only 60% comes out tax-free. Whether it's worth it depends less on the tax saved and more on whether you'd have invested that ₹50,000 anyway.

What the deduction actually does

Section 80CCD(1B) gives an extra ₹50,000 deduction for NPS contributions, over and above the ₹1.5 lakh limit under Section 80C. It's available only under the old tax regime — confirm the current year's rules before relying on it.

Your slabTax saved on ₹50,000
5%~₹2,600
20%~₹10,400
30%~₹15,600

That's real money, but it's a deduction, not free money — you're still putting in ₹50,000, just with pre-tax rupees.

The lock-in is longer than most people register

NPS money is locked till 60. Partial withdrawal is allowed only for specific reasons (education, medical treatment, first home) and capped at 25% of your own contributions. At retirement, at least 40% of the corpus must go into an annuity — taxable income for life, and one that historically yields somewhere around 6-7%. Only the remaining 60% comes out as a tax-free lump sum.

Compare that to an equity SIP: no lock-in beyond the exit-load window, full liquidity, and long-term capital gains taxed at a flat rate on withdrawal (check the current rate). Assuming a long-term equity return assumption of around 11-12% versus NPS's blended equity-debt return — NPS caps equity allocation, so its long-run return tends to land lower — the compounding gap over 25-30 years can outweigh the upfront tax saved.

When it's worth taking

When it's usually not

The cleaner way to decide is to model this against your actual slab, age, and other goals rather than going by the headline deduction — which is exactly what a proper tax and goal plan should do before you lock money away for 20+ years.

FAQ

Q. Is 80CCD(1B) available under the new tax regime?

A. No, as of now this deduction applies only under the old regime. Confirm against the current year's rules, since this is an area that has shifted before.

Q. Can I put in more than ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) for the diversification?

A. You can contribute more to NPS, but the deduction under this section is capped at ₹50,000. Anything above that gets no extra tax break here.

Q. Does my employer's NPS contribution count toward this ₹50,000?

A. No, employer contributions are claimed separately under Section 80CCD(2), which has its own limit and doesn't eat into your personal ₹50,000.

Q. What happens to the NPS corpus if I die before 60?

A. The full accumulated corpus goes to your nominee, and the mandatory annuity requirement doesn't apply — your family receives the entire amount.
