EPF vs VPF vs PPF: Where Should Your Next Rupee Go?

Choices · 20 September 2026 · Plan Our Future

VPF usually beats PPF for salaried employees — same interest as EPF (historically ~8.1–8.25%, revised yearly, confirm the current rate), no new account, and you can start or stop it with one form to payroll. PPF's edge: it's open to everyone, including a non-earning spouse, and stays tax-free with no income-linked cap.

The tax catch on VPF

Interest on your own EPF + VPF contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh with no employer share) is taxable under current rules. Most salaried earners never get close — you'd need well over ₹1.5–2 lakh/month voluntarily parked for it to matter. Check with a CA if your contributions are unusually high.

So which gets the next rupee?

  1. Mandatory EPF is already happening — no decision needed there.
  2. Want more debt allocation with zero new paperwork? VPF is the simplest lever — same safety and near-identical rate to EPF, effective from the next payroll cycle.
  3. Used up 80C elsewhere, or want a second tax-free bucket that isn't tied to your job? PPF is built for that — it survives job changes untouched, where EPF needs an active transfer.
  4. Neither should be your only debt bucket. Both are long-lock-in, low-liquidity. A working plan pairs EPF/VPF/PPF with a liquid emergency fund and a proper equity-debt split for each individual goal — not a blanket "safe" label for your whole salary.

This exact allocation call — how much of each new rupee goes to debt versus equity, per goal, based on how far away it is — is what a full goal-based financial plan settles for you, instead of a one-size answer applied to your entire salary.

FAQ

Q. Can I stop VPF contributions whenever I want?

A. Yes — inform your employer's payroll team and the change applies from the next cycle. No annual lock-in like PPF.

Q. Is VPF safer than PPF since it's the bigger scheme?

A. Both are equally government-backed. The real differences are access (PPF is open to all, VPF only via an employer), rate, and lock-in structure — not safety.

Q. Can I contribute to both VPF and PPF in the same year?

A. Yes. Your ₹1.5 lakh PPF limit is entirely separate from whatever goes into EPF/VPF through payroll.

Q. What happens to EPF/VPF if I switch jobs?

A. It should transfer to your new employer's EPF account via your UAN. It doesn't lapse, but transfers aren't always automatic — check your EPFO passbook after a job change to confirm it went through.
